How to Prep for Your First Laser Hair Removal Session

Laser hair removal (LHR) can be a game-changer for anyone ready to say goodbye to the hassle of shaving, waxing or tweezing. But to get the best results, and to make your experience as comfortable as possible, it’s important to properly prepare for your first session. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare and know what to expect before laser hair removal.

Don’t Shave before Your Consultation

At your consultation before starting laser hair removal treatments, our laser specialist will need to assess the color, thickness and density of your natural hair growth. If you shave or wax beforehand, it will be difficult or impossible for us to assess your natural hair and determine if laser hair removal could be right for you.

Then Shave within 24 Hours before Treatment

For your actual treatment session, the rules change: you should shave within 24 hours before your appointment. This will ensure that the laser energy is directed at the hair follicle beneath the skin rather than burning the hair above the surface. Just don’t shave immediately before leaving the house, as this can cause minor irritation, redness or razor burn that won’t have time to settle before your laser session. We typically recommend shaving a few hours before your appointment.

Arrive with Clean, Product-Free Skin

On the day of your treatment, make sure the area being treated is completely clean and free of lotions, deodorant, oils, makeup or self-tanner. These products can interfere with how the laser energy is absorbed and may increase the risk of irritation. If you’re treating the underarms, skip deodorant. For the face, arrive without makeup or skincare products.

Avoid NSAIDs and Caffeine

In the day or two before your appointment, avoid taking NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or aspirin, since these medications can have blood-thinning effects that can increase the risk of bruising. Similarly, cutting back on caffeine before your session can be helpful, as caffeine may heighten skin sensitivity.

Wear Light, Comfy Clothes

Laser hair removal sessions can vary in length depending on the size of the area being treated. To maximize comfort during your appointment, wear loose, lightweight clothing. Breathable fabrics can help to prevent overheating and reduce friction on the treated area, which may be slightly sensitive afterward.

Be Diligent about Sun Protection

Your skin will be more sensitive during and between laser hair removal sessions, so diligent sun protection is a must. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, even if you’ll only be near windows or driving in your car, since UV rays can penetrate glass

We recommend choosing a sunscreen with moisturizing properties as well to help combat any dryness that may follow LHR treatment. Protecting your skin from sun exposure also reduces the risk of complications like hyperpigmentation and maximizes your results.

Ready to Get Started?

Now that you know how to prepare, you can step into your first laser hair removal session with confidence. With a little planning and know-how, you’ll be well on your way to achieving smooth, carefree skin that lasts.
