What Do Laser Skin Treatments Feel Like?

man getting laser treatment

Before getting laser skin treatments, it’s natural to want to know more about what to expect and what the process feels like. In fact, one of the most common questions our Tampa patients ask us is, “Do laser skin treatments hurt?”

While every experience is unique and can vary by laser type and treatment location, most patients describe the sensation as tolerable and short-lived, especially with the right preparation and expert technique. To help you better understand what you can expect during and after laser skin treatments, take a look at this guide when preparing for your procedure.

What to Expect During Laser Skin Treatments

The exact feeling of a laser skin treatment can vary depending on the type of laser used, but in general, most of our patients liken it to the feeling of a rubber band snapping against the skin. Some people also equate it to a pinching or stinging sensation. This feeling might be more noticeable on delicate areas like the face and neck. Smaller areas typically only take around 10 to 15 minutes to treat, while larger areas can take 30 to 60 minutes.

Many of the latest lasers that we use at Simply Smooth have built-in cooling systems to help keep your skin as cool and comfortable as possible throughout treatment. Topical numbing cream can also be applied prior to your treatment to maximize your comfort.

Additionally, our highly skilled and experienced laser specialists utilize the best techniques to minimize discomfort when applying the laser to your skin, including using the proper speed and adjusting the laser devices to the proper settings for your skin type and needs.

If you are concerned about discomfort, we may suggest taking Tylenol (acetaminophen) about 20 to 30 minutes before your appointment and avoiding alcohol and caffeine the day before, as both can make your skin more sensitive and prone to redness.

What to Expect After Laser Skin Treatments

What your skin feels like after laser skin treatment depends on the type and strength of the laser used. For milder treatments, your skin may feel warm, tight or slightly sunburned for a few hours to a day. With moderate treatments, you might experience redness, swelling or tenderness for a couple of days. Deeper treatments, like fractional CO2 resurfacing, can cause peeling, flaking and tenderness for about a week afterward.

To help minimize these symptoms and keep your skin comfortable while it heals, we recommend:

  • Applying cool compresses as needed.
  • Using a gentle, non-irritating moisturizer.
  • Avoiding hot water, exfoliants and harsh skincare products.
  • Staying out of direct sunlight and applying daily sunscreen.
  • Following our post-care instructions as closely as possible.

You may also take Tylenol after laser skin treatments if needed. However, it is best to avoid NSAIDs like ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen, as these medications may increase bruising after treatment.
